Women Watch Afrika Celebrates World Refugee Day 2025

June 20, 2025 by Women Watch Afrika

Happy World Refugee Day! Women Watch Afrika salutes the Strength, Courage and Resilience of global refugees, asylees, and displaced persons.

World Refugee Day in 2025 will be observed on June 20th. This international day, designated by the United Nations, aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by refugees, while also celebrating the courage and resilience of refugees. The United Nations theme for 2025 is “Solidarity with Refugees,” emphasizing the need for concrete action beyond words to support those forced to flee their homes.

How can we put solidarity into action? It means listening to refugees and making space for their stories. It means defending their right to seek safety and finding solutions to their plight, uplifting their concerns in governmental conversations to end conflicts so they can return home in safety. It means ensuring they have opportunities to thrive in the communities that have welcomed them and providing countries with the resources they need to include and support refugees. But above all, solidarity means saying, clearly and courageously, that refugees are not alone and that we will not turn our backs.

Refugees are not looking for charity; they seek opportunity for self-advancement. When given the chance, they become integral, valuable, and productive members of the communities that welcome them. Every act of welcome, inclusion, and support brings us closer to a world where every person forced to flee can find not just refuge, but belonging, purpose, and hope.
