Happy International Day of the Girl Child! International Day of the Girl Child is an international day of observance declared by the United Nations– it is a day observed globally to acknowledge the gender inequality faced by girls worldwide based on their gender.
Additionally, this day of observance supports and promotes the active building of more opportunities for girls.
October 11, 2012, was the first Day of the Girl Child.
This Day is also known as The Day of Girls and The International Day of the Girl.
“The female child is entitled to the same opportunities afforded the male child: the right to education, health care, a childhood, etc. The girl child should not be treated as chattle, a possession sold or forced into child marriages or forced at an early age to work to fund the schooling of the male child as happens in parts of the world. The fight for equal rights and equity starts from birth. Furthermore, as this Day always falls within the Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we use this opportunity to emphasize that everyone is entitled to live a life free from violence and that we must continue the work to end domestic violence” -Preye Cobham, Esq., Attorney & Legal Director, Women Watch Afrika, Inc.
