Today is Women’s Equality Day (also known as Women’s Rights Day), a day that has been celebrated annually since 1971, on August 26th commemorating the 1920 adoption of the 19th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution which prohibited the states and federal governments from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex (granted women the right to vote). However, it is more than a celebration of women’s rights to vote. It is a day that pays tribute to the suffragists and trailblazers that fought for the rights of women and girls, for equality in all sectors. It is a day to acknowledge the past, bring awareness to the present, and build a plan for the future.
The reality is– today, in 2021– 101 years after the 19th Amendment was adopted and 50 years after the first celebration of Women’s Rights Day, women’s equality is still not fully realized. Though women have come far, there is still much work to be done to bring about equality. Women are important contributors to all sectors of our daily lives, yet sex discrimination still exists and there is still a glass ceiling that women have to fight through to rise to the top.
