Happy International Women’s Day!
What is International Women’s Day? International Women’s Day (March 8th) is a day for us to join voices with people around the world to state our message for equal rights loud and clear: “Women’s rights are human rights!” International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women, whether social, political, economic, or cultural.
Women Watch Afrika celebrates all women, in all their diversities. We embrace their facets and intersections of gender, faith, race, ethnicity, sexual identity, or disability. We celebrate those who came before us, those who stand beside us now, and those who will come after.
The official United Nations theme for International Women’s Day 2026 is “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls”. This theme focuses on dismantling barriers to equal rights, strengthening legal systems, and addressing the fact that women globally have only 64% of the legal rights of men. This theme emphasizes actionable, systemic change to ensure access to justice, safety, and dignity for women and girls.
An alternative, separate, but widely used campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2026 is “Give To Gain,” which encourages investing in women through resources, mentorship, and opportunities.
No matter which theme you decide to focus on this year, the most important thing is to stand together.
The work for Women’s Rights has come a long way, and while in some countries many rights have been attained, the work continues because there is still a long way to go.
On International Women’s Day we remember that as long as one woman faces discrimination, harassment, inequality or oppression, then we all do. As the United Nations development measure states that: “The development of any nation can only be measured by the level of the development of its women.”
Much remains to be done to achieve justice and equality for women and girls. So remember to uplift and celebrate women, and to shine a light on the importance of equal rights and equity.
As a grassroots organization, Women Watch Afrika has always been on the frontline supporting women, immigrants, refugees, asylees, and newly naturalized citizens in the state of Georgia. We served over 900+ families last year providing civic engagement, community trainings, financial and tangible assistance, communal food support, educational workshops, crisis and mental/emotional health counseling, legal services, and empowerment services.
