250 Years Later, The Work Continues

250 Years Later, The Work Continues

Today is July 4, 2026 and this marks the 250th anniversary of the United States of America.
On today, Women Watch Afrika acknowledges this 250th anniversary while uplifting that the work for freedom, equality, equity, and justice continues. The pursuit for a united nation free from racism, xenophobia, and misogyny continues.

Citizens and Immigrants alike still live in fear in this country.  Black Immigrants, African Immigrants, and Naturalized Americans in this country still live in fear, as families are being separated every day, while thousands languish in jailhouses, and the immigrant communities remain under attack. The struggle for safety and security still continues.

Many immigrants and refugees come to the United States with hopes and dreams for a better future, a safe place to raise their families in peace, and a place to be productive members of the community.  Most times, refugees and asylees arrive with only the clothes on their backs. They go through the challenging process of becoming part of their new community, and most take the steps to become naturalized citizens who fully participate in our nation’s democracy.

Freedom in this nation has not always been true, complete, or free.  While today is a day of celebration, it is also a day of reflection on where the nation has come from, and how far it still has to go to achieve the promise of freedom, liberty, and justice for all.

We celebrate the resilience of those who fight for equal rights and justice, and we remain strong and hopeful as we remind ourselves that Immigrants and Black people built this country with sweat and blood, and we believe in a victory that will come and that will last.

Women Watch Afrika joins in celebrating the generations of leaders, individuals, organizations, and organizers that have been a part of the continued pursuit of freedom, justice, liberty, equality, and equity.

Happy 250th anniversary to the United States of America; may the nation continue to improve, grow, and achieve the promise and ideals for which it stands and the hopes and dreams of equal rights and justice that we pursue.
