September 11, 2023 by Women Watch Afrika

It is hard to imagine that it has been 22 years.

9/11/2001.

Today, Women Watch Afrika remembers and honors the Fallen. This tragic incident occurred just three days after WWA’s return from the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance which took place in Durban, South Africa from August 31 through September 8, 2001. Though the United States pulled out of the Conference, and the parallel NGO Forum ended with some discord, the WWA delegation returned from WCAR refreshed and full of new hope and optimism of like-minded goals for the future.  We were settling back into our lives in States, with the exception of our Founder and CEO who had gone to London, England to attend another international conference.

Then September 11 happened.

And EVERYTHING was turned upside down.

We all remember where we were on that day and how we felt.

Our Founder couldn’t return back to the US as all flights were halted.

Everything was overwhelming.

So today, like on that day, we mourn the lives of the innocents, the 2,977 victims of terrorism, the fallen heroes (first responders) and remember and honor them. We never forget.

#WeRemember #911
