Women Watch Afrika Celebrates the Passage of the NO BAN Act
Today the House of Representatives passed HR 1333, the National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants Act (NO BAN Act), this Bill prohibits discrimination based on religion and limits executive authority to issue future bans–setting a higher bar/standard for the use of presidential authority to restrict or suspend entrance into the U.S., to avoid future discriminatory bans based on race, religion, or national origin.

Preye Cobham, Attorney and Legal Director for Women Watch Afrika, stated “Today’s passage of the NO BAN Act is a victory for the immigrant community, for the religious community, and for all other victims of the previous discriminatory bans like the previous “Travel Ban.”  Such discriminatory bans do nothing but further erode the trust and belief in the government to act fairly and to treat every individual with equal respect and dignity.  The Travel Ban attacked family unity and targeted Black immigrants, especially those immigrants from African nations and it attacked Muslims and other immigrants of color.”

Glory Kilanko, Founder and CEO, stated “this is a Strong Victory, it is important that the House of Representatives passed the NO BAN Act showing an affirmation to the believe that every individual should be treated equally and that laws should never be used to bypass fairness and the dignity of people.  The previous African and Muslim Travel Bans unfairly and unnecessarily targeted the Immigrant and Muslim communities, attacking Black and Brown people, and further marginalizing already marginalized communities. The Muslim and African Bans abused executive power, using the law to discriminate against and harm powerless and never to be developed countries solely on their national origin or religion, forgetting the role multinational corporations play in these countries. The NO BAN Act will make sure that no president can engage in this type of heartless act again. While this Act still needs to go the U.S. Senate, this is a great first step and we look forward to the Bill officially becoming law.”

The nation is going through one of the worst refugee and immigrant crisis in history, along with high tensions and critical racial divide dealing with the actions of the police against people of color; it is past time to work towards the ending of such divides. We are stronger together and America is (and should be) more than hate, xenophobia, and discrimination.

The previous Travel Bans were extremely discriminatory and xenophobic and in light of the times in which the nation is facing, were very disheartening.  We are happy about a positive first step. Women Watch Afrika will continue to speak out against Injustice.  We are not free, unless all of us are free.
