Women Watch Afrika Applauds the Biden Administration for the Redesignation of TPS for Haiti

Atlanta, Georgia— Today Women Watch Afrika applauds and commends the Biden Administration on its decision to redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of Haiti for eighteen months. In light of Haiti’s continued civil and political unrest, widespread violence, humanitarian and economic conditions, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and lack of vaccines, it was imperative that the US reinstate TPS status for Haiti.

This TPS will provide protection from deportation and permission to work for eligible nationals of Haiti.  More than 100,000 Haitians living in the US potentially stand to benefit from the redesignation.

Haiti was originally designated for TPS following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in 2010.  The effects of the devastating earthquake in 2010 exacerbated the severity of conditions of the country and those conditions have not abated.

Glory Kilanko, Founder and CEO, Women Watch Afrika stated:  “During an unprecedented global pandemic, it is more important than ever that everyone stand in solidarity with immigrant communities in the United States.  We commend Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and the Biden administration for honoring their pledge to reinstate TPS for Haiti, prioritizing humane and pragmatic solutions for immigrant communities.”

The designation, like many TPS labels, must be renewed at least every 18 months. The re-designation of Haiti under TPS protects the existing beneficiaries of the program as well as any Haitian nationals who have arrived in the United States since the last designation in 2017.  However, TPS does not provide a path to Citizenship.  As such, there is still work to be done.

Still, today, we celebrate the good news and encourage all eligible Haitian Nationals to consult a lawyer or trusted organization to get information on how to apply for or renew their TPS.
