The DeKalb Alphas Partner with Women Watch Afrika to Aid Refugee Families
DEKALB COUNTY, GEORGIA On August 20th 2020, The Nu Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and Women Watch Afrika, Incorporated will collaborate to distribute much needed supplies to women and families who are residing in Georgia as refugees.
Women and families who are resettled in the United States from war torn African countries often arrive without the education, skills, and resources needed to navigate the intricacies of American life. Familiar tasks such as trips to the grocery store, registering their children for school and driving are new and daunting experiences. Women Watch Afrika is a grassroots, nonprofit, international, national, and local social justice organization focused on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women and girls, the promotion of social and economic development and health equity of women, and the acculturation of immigrants and refugees arriving to the United States from 23 African nations. The DeKalb Alphas are partnering with Women Watch Afrika to supply families with backpacks filled with food and personal necessities. With the high rate unemployment and food insecurity because of COVID-19, the need for food banks has at times outstripped its capacity. This assistance is being provided at a critical time for many families.
