Recent Update: March 20, 2018
Today, Women Watch Afrika, Inc. and it’s partners and interested parties attended the House Public Safety Committee hearing.
Glory Kilanko, Executive Director & Founder of Women Watch Afrika testified that many refugees and immigrants in the community come from traumatic environments in which people in uniform were not there to protect them. As such, a bill like Senate Bill 452 would likely cause many of them not to report crimes as they won’t trust the officers. The distrust in the community would lead to increased crimes and unsafe communities. Others testified mentioning the financial and judicial burdens, and the unconstitutionalities of certain aspects of the proposed SB 452. After numerous testimony against the bill (and 2 in favor of the bill), the Committee recessed and returned to vote.
The House Public Safety Committee voted to pass an amended substitute version of SB 452.
Women Watch Afrika believes this was a successful period of advocacy. While the bill did not get thrown out completely as hoped, it was however, significantly watered down and the fight continues.
Women Watch Afrika, Inc, is asking everyone to keep making calls and sending emails to Georgia Speaker of the House David Ralston at 404-656-5020 and david.ralston@house.ga.gov to express their strong opposition to the anti-immigrant bill SB 452.
