WWA’s Show Your Love Campaign Highlights the Importance of Healthy Habits Before Pregnancy

December 12, 2016 by Women Watch Afrika Leave a Comment

Show Your Love, is a new national campaign developed by the National Preconception Health and Health Care Initiative (PCHHC) in partnership with Women Watch Afrika, Inc., to help women prepare for healthy pregnancies. Launched on 2016 Valentine’s Day, the campaign’s message points out that if a woman chooses to have a child, she can show love for her child by first loving herself by adopting healthy habits well before before becoming pregnant.

“Living a healthy lifestyle is a way to show love to yourself and your future baby, long before a baby is in the plans. By taking a few simple steps toward becoming as healthy as possible before pregnancy, women can experience long-lasting benefits for herself and her future children” (Angela D. Aina, Preventive Health Specialist)

“While most women know that improving their health once they become pregnant is important, many women don’t know that improving their health before pregnancy – even long before it’s a consideration – is also important for the health of a mother-to-be and her baby.” (Glory Kilanko, WWA Director & CEO).

On April 30th, 2016, Women Watch Afrika, Inc. (WWA) celebrated our first annual “Show Yourself Love” Day as part of the Show Your Love (SYL) Campaign sponsored by the National Preconception Health and Health Care (PCHHC) Initiative. The aim of the activity was to share with the community and their families what they have learned from WWA’s preventive health program, including what they learned from the SYL campaign, how they show themselves love, and how they used the information for health promotion activities.

The Preventive health program participants were encouraged to write a story about how they can show the world that they love themselves and are taking care of their body, health and minds by putting into practices all lessons learnt from the preventive health and civic engagement class. Through some short statements and declarations, participants demonstrated how the program has changed their life styles and behavior.

Our preconception health awareness focused on healthy living, such as nutrition, physical activity, stress reduction, and child spacing. These topics spanned over 6 sessions with the following descriptions:
